On this peering VLAN, members with their own ASN can peer directly with each other, without a detour through a transit provider or a large public internet exchange.<\/p>\n<p>Just got your own ASN and PI space? Then Clue-IX is the place to gain experience with BGP and test your configuration before connecting to a bigger internet exchange such as AMS-IX, NL-IX or Frys-IX. Making mistakes is allowed here, that&#8217;s how you learn.<\/p>\n<p>Like the rest of ColoClue, Clue-IX is built and maintained by volunteers in their spare time. It&#8217;s a non-profit hobby project, but we do it properly.<\/p>\n<h2>Where is Clue-IX?<\/h2>\n<p>The peering VLAN spans three locations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>NorthC AMS-01<\/li>\n<li>Iron Mountain AMS-01<\/li>\n<li>Nikhef<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you host your equipment with ColoClue at NorthC or Iron Mountain, you can connect to the peering VLAN directly. Is your equipment located elsewhere in NorthC or Iron Mountain? Then you can connect with a cross connect to our switch. Have your own equipment at Nikhef? Then we provide a port on Clue-IX there. You arrange the cross connect yourself.<\/p>\n<h2>Who can connect?<\/h2>\n<p>Clue-IX is open to all ColoClue members. Membership is open to anyone, in a personal capacity. Every member can request access to the peering VLAN. All you need is:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Your own ASN<\/li>\n<li>An <code>aut-num<\/code> object in the RIPE database, and preferably an <code>as-set<\/code><\/li>\n<li><code>route<\/code>\/<code>route6<\/code> objects and RPKI ROAs for the prefixes you announce<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Peering<\/h2>\n<p>You can peer on Clue-IX in two ways:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Bilateral:<\/strong> you arrange with other members whether and how you peer.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Via the route server:<\/strong> with a single BGP session you receive the routes of all participants that are also on the route server. The route server is currently being built.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You can find all IPs for ColoClue, the route servers and other peers on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peeringdb.com\/ix\/5106\">PeeringDB<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Joining policy<\/h2>\n<p>By connecting to Clue-IX you agree to the following rules. They&#8217;re there to keep the peering VLAN stable and clean, for everyone.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Only use the IPv4 and IPv6 addresses assigned to you on the peering VLAN.<\/li>\n<li>One MAC address per connection.<\/li>\n<li>Only the ethertypes IPv4 (0x0800), ARP (0x0806) and IPv6 (0x86DD).<\/li>\n<li>No broadcast or multicast, except ARP and IPv6 Neighbor Discovery. So no proxy ARP, DHCP, router advertisements, spanning tree, CDP, LLDP or IGPs such as OSPF.<\/li>\n<li>MTU of 1500 bytes.<\/li>\n<li>Only announce prefixes belonging to yourself or your downstreams, and make sure they are correctly registered in the RIPE database.<\/li>\n<li>Only send traffic to a peer for prefixes that peer announces to you via BGP. So no default route or static routes pointing to other peers, unless you&#8217;ve agreed on it together.<\/li>\n<li>Keep your contact details up to date, so we can reach you if there&#8217;s a problem.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If something goes wrong, the Network Committee may temporarily disable your connection to protect the rest of the VLAN. We&#8217;ll of course get in touch with you when that happens.<\/p>\n<h2>Costs<\/h2>\n<p>Access to Clue-IX costs nothing extra. If you need an additional switch port for it, that&#8217;s \u20ac5 per month (incl. VAT).<\/p>\n<h2>Requesting access<\/h2>\n<p>You can request access to Clue-IX from the Clue-IX workgroup or Network Committee. Not a member yet?
